The film Compartment, directed by Maj Rafferty, is an interpretation of Danish writer Ursula Scavenius's short story 'Compartment' from her latest book The Dolls, published by Lolli last year.
Anna, Jakub and Miska have lost their mother, Nastfa. Her last wish was to be buried in her hometown in Hungary. We follow the three grieving siblings in the oppressive train compartment as they travel to Hungary to try to fulfil their late mother's wish. Along the way, they talk about Nasfa's past as a refugee, and about how war and deportations have shaped her life.
The film was shot during the pandemic, and uses the pandemic as a frame. The first part was filmed in isolation, the second over zoom, and the third and final part in our current reality. Compartment is a painfully relevant commentary on the human consequences of war.
Join us for this exclusive screening at Бібліотека, a library and humanitarian aid donation centre for Ukraine that has been set up in Peckham. The Dolls will be available to purchase and author Ursula Scavenius will be around to sign your copy. All proceeds will be donated to Бібліотека and their cause.

FRANCE’S ROYAL SWEDISH REGIMENT
Tuesday 22 February 2022 (18:00 - 20:00)
Professor Neil Kent and Captain Clement Chevalier will talk about a Swedish regiment that participated in France’s greatest military campaigns during the reign of Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI.
Régiment de Royal Suédois played a part during the American War of Independence, fighting alongside Lafayette and General George Washington until the victory at Yorktown. Count Axel von Fersen purchased the position of colonel-proprietor of the regiment in 1783, possibly in order to be able to stay close to the Queen of France Marie Antoinette. He later struggled in vain to save the King and Queen during the French Revolution, and the regiment was disbanded at the close of the 18th Century.
The talk is the British launch of Professor Neil Kent and Captain Clément Chevalier’s new book, which sheds new light on this influential military unit. The work examines the regiment’s role in diplomatic and military relations between France and Sweden. It follows the fates of soldiers who chose to fight and, in some cases, to die for France.
Drinks and canapés will be served and signed books available to purchase. ... See MoreSee Less
