Anglo-Norse Society

The Anglo-Norse Society in London is a registered charity for the purpose of advancing the education of the citizens of Britain and  Norway about each other’s country and way of life. The Society was founded in 1918. There is a sister Society in Oslo, the Anglo-Norse Society in Oslo/Norsk-Britisk Forening, with similar purposes. The membership in London is mainly British and Norwegian, brought together by a common interest in Norway. The Society is always pleased to welcome new members.
The Society meets approximately every three weeks from September to May at the Norwegian Embassy. The programme includes talks by British and Norwegian speakers on a wide variety of subjects from aspects of Norwegian political life and its economy to travel and history, supplemented by quiz evenings and showings of Norwegian films. Meetings usually begin at 19.30 with an opportunity for members to get together beforehand and to buy sandwiches, coffee and wine. There are also special events, such as visits to the theatre, concerts and exhibitions. The current programme is described in the latest newsletter.

The Society also awards grants for British or Norwegian students on courses in each other’s country. Recent awards have included grants for attendance at the Summer School in Bergen and bursaries to help fund PhD research in Norway.  The Society also helps students and others obtain Norwegian educational books at reasonable cost, including sales from our own stock.

Membership is open to anybody with an interest in Norway.  There is a modest subscription, which covers admission to the normal programme, but some special events require payment for tickets. The subscription also covers the Anglo-Norse Review, which is published twice a year and circulated to members of both the London and Oslo societies.
